What About Blogs? July 2006

Hello fellow bloggers!

Now that you have had an opportunity to look at several different types of blogs out there, what do you think?

Create a comment on this posting that discusses what you may have discovered, new ideas you now have, a blog you thought was particularly great, or questions you may still have.

Be sure to read other posts and make comments to them if you'd like.

Thanks!
Lee Anne

I thank blogging can be exciting. I loved the educational blogs that were used for specific classes. For instance there was one over the novel Sarah Plain and Tall. The students had to comment on the plot and other elements that make up a story.

Like everything on the web, there is a lot of junk to go through to find anything good.

I found lots of great ideas to use blogs for in the educational setting.

Very interesting. I can't believe students want to write and read this much!

I really think that it is just like drinking from a fire hose. I don't have the skills.... yet... to filter through all the "fluff" and get to the things that would be really helpful to me as a teacher. I still think that this would be an excellent communication tool for both teachers and students and maybe parents too. Kim

I wonder if we are not moving toward an age of classrooms without teachers. This can be a wonderful thing for home schooled students with computers or if a classroom has networked computers for each student. But I worry about the human factor in education.

Well...I'm still not convinced! Maybe it's just me but I found it to be quite challenging to find useful information on the blogs. I think there is a place for this in education...however I think controling content and making sure the blog is used properly will be a problem.

Well, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the possibilities. But, I've been here before ever so many times: answering machines, the Internet, HTML, URL, my new microwave, the tv remote with 40 ways to mess up the screen,.... Now I can say I've started to understand. the amount of information now at my fingertips is astonishing.

Andrea,

Maybe you can consider setting up your own blog for your disciplne area. That way you can control all contents of it.
I am not looking at blogs to get information per se, but I am looking for ideas of how I can carry over into the subjects that I teach. Working with high school students you must always have new ways to motivate them into doing the work.

to anonymous worried about not needing teachers --
Someone will always have to direct the traffic. Someone needs to know what to learn first in order to get to the steps in order. Someone has to answer questions or find you when you get lost.
We will always serve a purpose...it's just that our purpose may change.

To Linda...good point and idea. I think I'll consider your advice. And I totally agree that you have to get creative to keep thier interest. :)
